Adding a beneficiary
A beneficiary is someone you pay — a landlord, a supplier, the revenue service. One form captures a beneficiary, whether you know their bank account number or only a proxy for it.
Add a beneficiary
- Open the counterparty’s or operating entity’s Beneficiaries panel.
- Select Add Beneficiary.
- Choose the identifier type.
- Fill in the fields the type asks for.
- Select Save.
The identifier type decides what you enter next:
| Identifier type | What you enter |
|---|---|
| IBAN, UK, US, or a South African bank | The account number and whatever else that standard needs |
| Mobile / customer proxy | The proxy type and value — see paying by proxy |
Capturing by proxy in the same form
Choosing a mobile number, email address, or customer identifier switches the form to the proxy fields. Confirm the registered name before saving — see paying by proxy for why, and what happens if the name later changes.
Your organisation’s own bank accounts never offer a proxy identifier type. A proxy is only ever a way of paying someone; it is never something you collect from.
Setting up payments while you capture
The same form carries the beneficiary’s default references and where proof of payment goes, so you set them once instead of coming back for a second screen:
- My reference and Their reference — see payment references
- Email address and Mobile number, for proof of payment
Leave any of these blank and set them later from the beneficiary’s own Details panel — see reading an external account.
None of these appear when you add your own bank account. They describe a payment to someone, so they only apply to a beneficiary.
Why it’s one form, one save
Capturing a beneficiary used to mean a form and then a follow-up screen for references. Now it’s one write: if anything is wrong, nothing is saved, so a beneficiary can never exist half set up.
